Pousada Picinguaba

Rainforest hikes

Rainforest hikes

We are in the middle of what is left of the coastal rainforest which used to line the entire coast from São Paulo to North of Rio. Our region is still virgin forest and contains several nature reserves: the National Park of Bocaina, the State Park of Serra do Mar, the Environment Protection Centre of Núcleo Picinguaba. Most parts of it are non-constructible.

The Mata Atlantica is one of the richest ecosystems in the whole planet, around 45% of animal and plant species are indigenous, and it is home for over 300 bird species, a dream for bird-watchers. Some sections are listed as World Heritage by Unesco.

Because cities are far away, the region stayed out of reach of modern development. The coast is dotted by small fishing communities and secluded coves. Up mountain, there are friendly villages farming sugarcane, banana and cassava. You sometimes stumble upon forgotten colonial sites or a fazenda from another age where primitive water powered stills are still used to produce sugar cane liquor, cachaça, which is surprisingly tasty and deserves its good reputation throughout the country. We offer half-day or whole day hikes in the forest, and adapt the program to your level and the weather conditions; even during a short stay, you will get to discover many exceptional sites with the help of our experienced local guides.
